In this world there are so many pleasures to absorb. The Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and Mount Everest are a few I'd like to see before I die. Even common things like a good rain storm or a sunset are beautiful in their natural, can-not-be-improved-by-us way. The amazing plants and animals that we have to see and enjoy can be lovely and dangerous. All of it is wonderful and none of it could we add anything of value to.
What have we done to deserve any of it? Music the birds already give us. Dances are already done to find mates. There was very little we could create or do to improve the world by the time we got here.
We can write, create movies, create new architecture, but the best thing humanity has ever done is been born mortal. We do more harm than good. But everything we do will only be temporary. In the long run the world will out live us, so long as we don't actually destroy it in destroyin' ourselves. The world will be better off without us.
In our mortality perhaps our existence is justified. What one generation does can be undone by the next three. New generations allow us immortality to fix the mistakes made by those that came before us. In those corrections lies a chance to redeem ourselves for the terrible toll we've taken on this world.
We bombed, raped, stole from, and all around fucked this paradise handed down to us like she was a two dollar whore down for the nastiest of nasties.
But you see the people on T.V. talkin' like it wasn't their fault. It wasn't anybody's fault. We all just got here, you know. Anybody that had anything to do with gettin' the ball rollin' is long dead. Now we're all here rollin' new balls like crazy. All new, all different men. We're nuthin' like the people that came before us. Except that we are. We're all bastards. We are all born selfish and whiny and stupid.
Of course I'm a terrible person. I'm a person. The math is that simple. The definition of what it is to be human has, as far as the majority of history is concerned, is to be the meanest, ugliest creature you can be with little regard for anything else. But it doesn't have to be.
Like a bad haircut one generation falls away to give way to the next. Humans are relatively young creatures in the universe. Our planet is just a baby girl and often times we do things to her that the rest of the universe must consider damned indecent of us to do to a child. Being young saves us as does our ability to die.
If you've ever known a teenager you know how self-righteous and foolish humanity as a whole can be. But some of us actually outgrow the gossip, the drama, the self-centeredness, and all those other things that give teens a bad name. Hopefully as our genetics mature we will become better people and the definition of humanity will catch up to the hope we all have.
Our ability to die puts this generation's future in the hands of today's youth. Hopefully they'll do something better with it than we did. Hopefully we'll do sumthin' better than what the generation before us has done.
